In the Dark It was the year 1962 when the screams from Evangeline rang out southern Louisiana. The grim shadow of Don Johnson still appears in the exact window on the fourth floor every year on the same night. Sometimes one can even catch the sound of horrified shrills within the misty, humid air. Rachelle’s parents were not even thought of in 1962, but here she was forty years later, standing in front of the same five story dormitory Johnson had been last seen alive. Rachelle was unaware of the tragic past that surrounded the building. She was unaware of the man that had taken his last breath in the library window. The only thing Rachelle knew about the dorm was that her best friend Bri would be there. She could not believe that they had actually made it out of high school alive. It seems like only yesterday that the seniors were pushing them around and dunking their poor friend Eric Runalds in the man-sized dumpster, and now here they were, freshmen all over again. Rachelle was determined, however, not to relive the oppression of high school. After all in college, everyone started on equal ground. Rachelle took a deep breath as she pushed open the heavy brown door. The dorm was gorgeous. A large, elegant chandelier draped towards the white, tiled floor in the middle of the entrance room. To the left, she could see a long furnished desk with two awaiting smiles eagerly peering at her. “Can we help you?” the Barbie doll girl asked cheerfully. “I need to check in,” Rachelle said as she nervously looked down at her pink and white, checkered shoes. “What’s your name?” the other girl with the fifties, styled glasses asked. “Rachelle Jacobs,” she mumbled softly under her breath. “Oh here you are!” the Barbie doll girl exclaimed pulling her head from a huge filing cabinet. Barbie doll passed the folder to Rachelle while the girl with the glasses explained how to do the paperwork while handing her, her dorm key. “Finally,” Rachelle thought as she made her way up the spiraling stairs to the fourth floor. The first thing that caught her attention was the double-brown, wood doors that seemed to lead into a large room. Rachelle took a glance in to find a few girls sitting at study tables and aisles upon aisles of bookshelves lined up. She was awe struck that there was such a large and beautiful library inside of a dormitory. Rachelle softly closed the door, trying not to disturb the girls sitting at the tables. Further down the hall, Rachelle had reached her destination. She would be staying in room 423. She anxiously opened the form to find her friend Bri waiting for her. Both the girls screamed immediately with excitement. “Oh my God! I am so glad you are here. This place was beginning to freak me out,” Bri pointed to the bare, white walls and ceiling. “It looks like a prison,” she claimed while grasping the ends of her full-size bed. “Yeah, it is a little eerie in here,” Rachelle shivered as she examined the room. “At least it is away from our parents,” Rachelle reminded herself out loud as she began to unpack her clothes into the small four-drawled dresser. “You’re right,” Bri nodded as she peered out the window. |
